Title: 2nd Major Assignment Evaluator: Hayoung Lee Presenter: Yohan Seo Date: 2017/ 05/ 31
Speech Value (Interesting, meaningful to audience) 1 It was really meaningful because the speech was not only for the audience but also for himself. His personal examples made the speech even stronger. I will be depressed no more. I will not give up.
Preparation (Research, rehearsal) 1 I could see a lot of prepwork was done for this speech – all those quotes! He must have spent a lot of time thinking about which quote would work best for his speech. One little improvement could be made next time: rather than peeking at the script, it would have been better for him to hold notecards for reference.
Organization (Logical, clear) 1 His transition was clear, and the body was well organized. All of his subtopics ‘encouraged’, as the main message he was trying to give was ‘encouragement’. Both the opening and the conclusion were also strong. Overall, the speech was organized well.
Opening (Attention-getting, led into topic) 2 “Are you a loser?” definitely caught my ears. However, I think the speaker could have paused before continuing with his next sentence. Then, the impact would have been much greater.
Body (Flowed smoothly, appropriate support material) 1 I was impressed how he quoted a verse from the Bible and connected it to his speech. I liked the way his personal beliefs supported his message to the audience. Along with the Bible, he quoted many other figures and those quotes worked well as supporting material. His personal stories came after the quotes, and they were all relevant to his main idea. His hardtime-overcoming story gave a vivid touch to the speech. Also, the elephant story was interesting!
Conclusion (Effective) 1 Don’t worry! Don’t give up! Don’t be depressed! Only, keep smiling! His conclusion was so strong that I can still remember it now. It was super effective and he managed to leave a strong impact. The visual aid showed his ‘slogans’ and it really aided. Great conclusion.
Transitions (appropriate, helpful) 1 First, second, third. Numbers are the clearest signposts.
What could the speaker have done differently to make the speech more effective? His opening could have given much more impact to the audience if he had paused right after finishing his first line. Plus, talking more of his personal experiences would have been more effective.
What did you like about the presentation? I liked how he interacted with his audience. I liked his eye contact and body gestures which made his speech more effective and impressive. I liked his speed except for the very beginning. Overall, it was a well organized speech. What I liked the most was how he overcame his stage fright. I saw no signs of nervousness or anxiety. Zero. Considering how much he has improved over the last 14 weeks, it is amazing to see this speech. Wow. I hope to see more of this coming soon in the next semester too! Great work, Yohan!
