Assignment Title : The Person I Admire

    1. What was the overall purpose of the speech. Try to restate or summarize the main point. How well was it addressed?
The overall purpose of her speech was to introduce the person she admires the most—her mother. She admires her mother because of her great personality, her diligent attitude towards work and her enthusiasm to try something new. She had an opener, a well written body and a closer, which can be said well addressed.

    2. Was there a hook? Was it effective? How could it have been improved?
Her hook was giving the audience three adjectives describing her mother. This made us wonder what kind of person she is, leading the crowd to listen carefully to her speech. It was a new kind of hook. I really liked it. It was good enough, but another way could be asking the audience about their admirable person.

    3. Was the structure logical? Point supported by evidence or examples? Good transitions between ideas?
It was logical. The three main points were logically written, well describing what kind of person her mother is. She introduced her mother’s background, and her recent good deeds to back up her statement. Her use of transitions helped in organizing the structure of her speech in my head.

    4. Was the conclusion concise? Were main points restated or summarized? Was the closing memorable?
She summarized why she admires her mother, and says she hopes to become a mother like her one day. It was a warm closer. Truly memorable.

    5. Did the speaker use enthusiasm, pauses, humor, visual aids,
Pauses were used well. She didn’t use humor and visual aids though. It was still a great speech without them. She was very calm when delivering her speech.

    6. What did you notice about the speaker’s body language? Posture, eye contact, gestures.
She didn’t use gestures, but her eye contact was OK. She did have some notes in her hand, but didn’t refer to it. It could have been better if she didn’t hold notes—if she wasn’t going to use them!—to look more natural.

    7. Was the volume good? Did the speaker enunciate and pronounce clearly? Could everything be understood?
Yes. All the requirements were met. Good job, Na Yeon! I appreciate your hard work.

Assignment Title: A Great Vacation Idea

    1. What was the overall purpose of the speech? Try to restate or summarize the main point. How well was it addressed?
She recommends a trip to Jinju, South Korea. She talks about its beautiful scenery and how people can relax there, temple stays if wanted, and she mentioned her grandmother’s family lives there. All her points were supported by her personal experience and were thus really effective.

    2. Was there a hook? Was it effective? How could it have been improved?
Yes, there was a hook. She began her speech by asking a question and answering to it. She said that she wants to take a break from her daily routine. Her question was effective. It could have been better if she had paused a bit in between her opening question and her answer to it. Giving a pause for a second or two may have helped : )

    3. Was the structure logical? Point supported by evidence or examples? Good transitions between ideas?
Her structure was logical. Her main points – beautiful scenery and temples – were all backed up by details. Her personal examples also worked well. She recommended Jinju for its beautiful landscape, temple stays and for a personal reason (her family reunion is possible in Jinju) at the end. Transitions were also great.

    4. Was the conclusion concise? Were main points restated or summarized? Was the closing memorable?
The conclusion was concise and strong. She gave a quote that went like “A journey makes a man…”. And right after the quote she suggested, “How about going on a trip?” Her closing was unequivocally memorable.

    5. Did the speaker use enthusiasm, pauses, humor, visual aids?
She was enthusiastic about recommending Jinju as the next vacation spot. She did not use any visuals, but I think some slides of Jinju may have helped the audience to get a general idea of Jinju.

    6. What did you notice about the speaker’s body language? Posture, eye contact, gestures.
Her body movement was hindered as she hold notes in one hand. Other than that, her eye contact with her audience was good.

    7. Was the volume good? Did the speaker enunciate and pronounce clearly? Could everything be understood?
The volume was great and her pronunciation was great as well. Everything was understood perfectly.

Thank you for sharing your speech with us, Na Yeon! : )
